Mavericks
Khris Middleton chose to remain with the Mavericks rather than pursue a buyout, and that makes sense.
As relayed by The Stein Line’s Marc Stein, had Middleton negotiated a buyout, he would have forfeited his Bird rights — a key factor as he approaches unrestricted free agency this summer. By staying put, he preserves flexibility, including the possibility of a sign-and-trade.
Stein notes Dallas has interest in retaining the 34-year-old, depending on how the roster evolves. Middleton has made an impression internally, both in the locker room and on the court, where he is averaging 12.6 points and 4.0 rebounds through eight games.
Rockets
Veteran guard Tyus Jones cleared waivers after being released by Dallas, positioning himself to join a contender.
The Rockets were viewed as a potential landing spot after exploring veteran backcourt help at the deadline. For now, Stein reports Houston does not plan to make an immediate addition.
NBA Draft
Not everyone is sold on Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson as a No. 1 overall pick.
One lottery team evaluator told Stein he would pass at the top spot, citing durability concerns.
“Too many question marks,” the evaluator said.
Meanwhile, one scout told Hoops Wire that Peterson will likely need to have a strong NCAA Tournament to move back up to top-pick territory.
