The National Basketball Players Association issued a statement following reports that the Bucks would prefer to shut down Giannis Antetokounmpo for the remainder of the season, as relayed by Shams Charania of ESPN.
In the statement, the NBPA emphasized that the league’s Player Participation Policy is intended to ensure that healthy stars are on the floor, adding that enforcement is critical to maintaining competitive integrity.
“The Player Participation Policy was designed by the league to hold teams accountable and ensure that when an All-Star like Giannis Antetokounmpo is healthy and ready to play, he is on the court,” the union said. “Unfortunately, anti-tanking policies are only as effective as their enforcement; fans, broadcast partners, and the integrity of the game itself will continue to suffer as long as ownership goes unchecked.”
The statement comes amid a growing disconnect between Milwaukee and Antetokounmpo.
As reported last week by Eric Nehm of The Athletic, the Bucks would prefer the two-time MVP sit out the rest of the season as he recovers from a knee hyperextension and bone bruise. Antetokounmpo, however, has been “adamant” about returning once medically cleared, per Nehm and Charania.
Milwaukee sports a 29-42 record — which has fueled the organization’s desire to prioritize long-term health and positioning.
Antetokounmpo’s stance hasn’t changed. He wants to play.
