All the Mavericks need is direction. They have the pieces.
But according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the biggest question in Dallas right now isn’t about the roster. It’s about who’s running it.
Team owner Patrick Dumont has yet to name a full-time head of basketball operations after moving on from Nico Harrison in November. In the meantime, Matt Riccardi and Michael Finley have been handling things on an interim basis.
There have already been big moves.
Dallas pulled off a blockbuster deal involving Anthony Davis that brought back multiple draft picks and helped reshape the team’s long-term outlook.
Now, the Mavericks are building around No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and will add another lottery selection in what’s viewed as a strong 2026 draft.
They also have options. Young pieces like Dereck Lively II and Max Christie are in place, while veterans such as Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and others could either stay or be moved depending on the direction.
That’s where the decision comes in.
Whoever Dumont puts in charge will be shaping all of it. So that decision may be the most important one they make.
