Mark Cuban is good with selling the Mavericks. Just not how it played out.
Speaking on the Intersections podcast, Cuban admitted he has one lingering regret from the December 2023 deal.
“I don’t regret selling. I regret who I sold to,” Cuban said, via Mike Curtis of the Dallas Morning News. “I made a lot of mistakes in the process, and I’ll leave it at that.”
Cuban sold his majority stake to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont, who now serves as team governor.
At the time, Cuban said he would remain in charge of basketball operations. That didn’t hold up. There was nothing in the contract guaranteeing that role.
According to Christian Clark of The Athletic, Cuban’s influence had clearly faded by February 2025, when Dumont approved the trade of Luka Doncic. Then-GM Nico Harrison led those talks before later being dismissed.
Cuban still owns about 27 percent of the team and remains a regular at home games. The Mavericks, meanwhile, are 24-50.
He also explained why he stepped away.
“It’s a big emotional commitment,” Cuban said. “You hear the passion and everything. Now imagine going up and down like that every single game. That’s hard.
“My kids, they were coming of age where they would be of the mindset maybe they want to work at the Mavs, and I didn’t want that for them. If fans don’t like what you’re doing or the team’s not doing well, you’re the worst human being on the planet, and they treat you that way.”
No regrets about selling. Just one about the buyer.
