Knicks clinch playoff spot, stay in mix for top-three seed

It’s now official — the Knicks are headed back to the playoffs.

New York became the third team in the East to officially secure a postseason spot after the 76ers lost to the Heat on Monday, according to the NBA.

The Pistons were first to clinch a top-six spot, followed by the Celtics.

No matter how things shake out, the Knicks can finish no lower than sixth. They sit at 48-27, good for third place in the conference.

Boston’s loss to the Hawks on Monday pulled New York within two games of the No. 2 seed. The Knicks also hold a 1.5-game edge over the Cavaliers for fourth.

So the positioning is still very much in play.

This is largely the same roster that reached the Eastern Conference finals in 2025, the franchise’s first trip that far in 25 years. The biggest change came on the sideline, where Mike Brown replaced Tom Thibodeau.

Back in January, owner James Dolan made the expectations clear. The goal, at minimum, was an NBA Finals appearance.

The Knicks have checked the first box.
