LeBron James free agency: Warriors option would bring star power, familiarity

The Warriors idea is easy to picture. Whether it makes sense is another question.

According to Tim Bontemps and Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the Warriors remain one of the more intriguing possibilities for LeBron James this offseason.

The connections are obvious.

James and Stephen Curry defined an era with four straight Finals matchups. They later teamed up with Steve Kerr at the 2024 Olympics, where Kerr said the two developed a “bromance.”

Kerr hasn’t pushed the idea publicly.

“I don’t have an investment in it, other than I know how good he is for the NBA,” Kerr said. “So whenever he retires, we’re going to miss him.”

There’s more familiarity. Draymond Green is one of James’ closest friends in the league. Jimmy Butler is also on the roster, though he’s recovering from a torn ACL.

On paper, the fit would be fascinating. Pairing James with Curry would instantly become one of the league’s biggest storylines.

“I don’t know how good they’d be,” an Eastern Conference scout told ESPN, “but it would be a fun way to go through his last year.”

That might be part of the appeal.

From a basketball standpoint, there are cleaner fits. From a spectacle standpoint, this one would be tough to top.
