Victor Wembanyama, Ausar Thompson win Defensive Player of Month awards

Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama has been named Western Conference Defensive Player of the Month for March, marking his third straight win after also earning the honor in January and February, the NBA announced.

The frontrunner for this season’s Defensive Player of the Year continued to dominate on that end, totaling a league-high 56 blocks (3.7 per game) and 20 steals (1.3) across 15 March appearances.

He also ranked among the league leaders in contested shots, helping power San Antonio to a 14-1 record in games he played during the month.

In the Eastern Conference, Pistons wing Ausar Thompson picked up his second Defensive Player of the Month award this season, having also won it in January.

Thompson led the NBA in steals per game in March, recording 32 steals in 13 games (2.5 per contest). He also paced the league in deflections per game at 4.8 while adding 1.1 blocks per night, continuing to emerge as one of the league’s most disruptive perimeter defenders.

Other Western Conference nominees included Donovan Clingan, Rudy Gobert, Kris Dunn, Chet Holmgren and Luka Doncic.

In the East, Thompson beat out Scottie Barnes, Evan Mobley, OG Anunoby, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Dyson Daniels.
