Just when it looked like it might be slipping away, the Nuggets found something they hadn’t shown much of in this series. Namely, help.
Denver stayed alive with a 125-113 win over the Timberwolves in Game 5, cutting the series deficit to 3-2 and sending things back to Minneapolis.
The stars were still the stars. Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray did their part. But this one was about everyone else.
With Aaron Gordon sidelined and the rotation looking thin, Denver’s role players finally delivered. Spencer Jones came out of nowhere with 20 points and four threes after barely making an impact through the first four games. Cam Johnson, Christian Braun and Bruce Brown brought energy on both ends.
That’s been the swing factor all series. When Denver’s depth shows up, it looks like a different team.
They also forced the issue. Minnesota turned it over 25 times, leading to 35 Denver points. That’s how you survive when you’re short-handed.
Now it shifts again. Game 6 goes back to Minnesota, where the Timberwolves will try to close it out on their home floor. That’s easier said than done right now. They’re still navigating life without Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, and the rotation has been in flux.
There have been flashes. Ayo Dosunmu has delivered big games in this series. Others, not as much.
And, of course, there’s a little edge creeping in. Physical play. Extra chatter. Jaden McDaniels has been right in the middle of it.
But it’s probably not about that. It’s about who shows up around the stars.
Minnesota needs one more win. Denver needs two. Suddenly, this one feels very much alive.
