Report: Tristan Thompson seeks conservatorship for brother Amari

Former Cavaliers big man Tristan Thompson has filed for conservatorship of his younger brother, Amari Thompson, according to a report from TMZ, citing court documents.

The filing seeks legal authority over Amari Thompson’s personal and medical matters, including access to records, the ability to provide medical consent and oversight of educational decisions.

It also requests control over certain aspects of Amari’s personal contacts, according to the report.

Thompson previously served as his brother’s guardian. He assumed a larger role in Amari’s care following the death of their mother, Andrea Brooks, on Jan. 5, 2023. In the filing, Thompson states that their father has not been involved in Amari’s life for several years.

Thompson, 35, was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft and spent the majority of his career with the Cavaliers. He was part of the franchise’s 2016 championship team that rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals, ending a 52-year title drought for the city.

Known for his durability and rebounding, Thompson set a Cavs record by appearing in 447 consecutive regular-season games and played a key role during multiple Finals runs. He later had stints with Boston, Sacramento, Indiana, Chicago and the LA Lakers before returning to Cleveland in 2023.

Thompson did not play in the NBA this past season and is currently a free agent.

The court filing has not yet been ruled on.
