The Grizzlies have released a statement on the sudden death of forward Brandon Clarke. He was 29.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the statement read. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Clarke, who has spent the past seven seasons in Memphis after being selected with the 21st pick in the 2019 draft, was 29 years old.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”
Clarke was a first-round draft pick in 2019 and a member of the All-Rookie First Team. He averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds in seven seasons with the Grizzlies. Injuries limited him to two games last season.
No cause of death has been determined.
