Victor Wembanyama takes over as Spurs push Timberwolves to brink

The Spurs are one win away. And it’s starting to feel like Victor Wembanyama’s series.

San Antonio rolled past Minnesota 126-97 in Game 5 to grab a 3-2 lead, setting the tone early and never letting up. The message inside the building was “Locked In.” It showed.

Wembanyama dominated from the start. He had 21 points in the first half, including a six-minute stretch where he poured in 16. At one point in the first quarter, he had 16 by himself. Minnesota had 11.

He finished with a 20-point, 11-rebound half, the first player this postseason to hit those numbers in a single half. Defensively, he was just as impactful, holding the Timberwolves to 3-of-11 shooting on attempts he contested.

San Antonio got help. De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle and Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson combined for 56 points. The Spurs piled up 68 points in the paint and controlled the game physically.

Now it shifts to Game 6 in Minnesota on Friday.

The Timberwolves are out of room. Julius Randle hasn’t found a rhythm, shooting 26-of-71 with 18 turnovers in the series. Anthony Edwards has carried a heavy load and could benefit from the extra rest between games.

Doesn’t matter unless Minnesota responds. Right now, this series belongs to Wembanyama.
