LeBron James is back in a familiar place. Another offseason. Another set of questions.
Around the NBA, the Lakers are viewed as the most logical outcome. That does not make it a done deal.
“It’s just hard to fit him anywhere,” a Western Conference scout said, via ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps.
James is still producing at a high level. The issue is not performance. It’s the market.
Teams with cap space are not seen as natural fits. Contenders that would interest James would need to get creative, likely through a trade, to make the money work. That keeps pulling the conversation back to Los Angeles.
“I’d pay LeBron whatever he wants as long as it’s a one-year deal,” one executive said. “Re-signing LeBron is good business.”
The Lakers’ roster also plays into it.
Beyond James, the most realistic path to improvement may be continuity. Bringing back Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart and possibly Luke Kennard could be the clearest short-term route.
That’s part of the equation. Contract expectations. Supporting cast. Direction of the team.
The Lakers may still be the frontrunner. But there’s just enough uncertainty to keep everyone watching.
