LeBron James’ status continues to hover over Lakers

The Lakers know one thing heading into the summer; Luka Doncic is their franchise centerpiece.

Everything else feels a little less certain.

As outlined by a Los Angeles Times roundtable, one of the biggest questions facing the organization is what comes next for LeBron James, who turns 42 years old at about the midway point of 2026-27.

James could re-sign with the Lakers. He could test free agency. He could even retire. At this point, all possibilities appear to remain on the table.

The larger question may be what a new contract would look like if James decides to continue playing in Los Angeles.

Times columnist Bill Plaschke suggested there could be a gap between what the Lakers and James might view as fair value at this stage of his career, particularly with Doncic now firmly established as the team’s primary offensive star.

Others on the panel disagreed, believing the two sides can ultimately find common ground.

The Lakers have other important decisions to make as well.

The panel largely agreed that retaining guard Austin Reaves should be a priority, while also identifying the center position as a major area of need.

That remains true regardless of whether Deandre Ayton exercises his $8.1 million player option for next season.

Still, all roads lead back to James.

The Lakers have their franchise player in Doncic. What happens next with LeBron could determine how quickly Los Angeles returns to championship contention.
