Cavs have reason to sweat James Harden’s future, analyst says

James Harden has a player option worth $42.3 million for next season and is expected to decline it. That alone should make the Cavaliers a little nervous.

Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes believes Harden’s situation is Cleveland’s biggest fear heading into the 2026 offseason, and it’s hard to argue with that.

“Harden has a long history of, let’s say, fraught contract situations,” Hughes wrote. “He’ll agitate for an exit the moment he’s unhappy with anything, and no one should argue he’s above making things uncomfortable for the Cavs — even when he lacks negotiating leverage.”

Harden was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers in February and helped Cleveland reach the conference finals for the first time since 2018. The Cavs were swept by the New York Knicks, though it could have gone differently.

Cleveland had a real shot at Game 1 at MSG. The Cavs led before the Knicks went at Harden defensively down the stretch, triggering a 44-11 run over the fourth quarter and overtime. New York won 115-104 in one of the greatest comebacks in NBA history.

After the sweep, Harden said he wants to stay.

“Definitely want to be here,” he said. “I think we found something. It’s tough. It’s not ending how we wanted to, but I think we found something.”

Good enough. But we’ve heard Harden say the right things before.

He’s played for six teams — Oklahoma City, Houston, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, the Clippers and now Cleveland. He’s been traded by every single one of them. That history doesn’t just disappear because he averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists in the regular season and was solid enough in the playoffs.

Most expect Harden and Donovan Mitchell to be back next season. That’s probably how it plays out. But remember — most people didn’t expect the Dallas Mavericks to trade Luka Doncic to the Lakers, either.

Pencil Harden in when the contract is signed. Not a moment before.
