Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson recently traveled to Italy to watch 2025 second-round pick Saliou Niang in action, and it sounds as if he liked what he saw.
According to Federico Bettuzzi of Tuttosport, Atkinson attended Virtus Bologna’s playoff game and came away impressed by the 22-year-old forward’s development.

Atkinson described Niang as a “strong, determined young man” while praising his energy and leadership qualities.
More notably, the Cavs coach offered a glimpse into how the organization views the young prospect moving forward.
“I believe he will be part of our franchise’s future,” Atkinson said, via Bettuzzi and Alessandro Maggi of Sportando.
Niang was selected by Cleveland in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft and spent this past season continuing his development overseas. The Cavs have frequently emphasized patience with young players, particularly international prospects who may benefit from additional experience before making the jump to the NBA.
Atkinson’s comments don’t necessarily mean Niang will be on the Cavaliers’ roster next season. However, they do suggest the organization remains encouraged by his progress.
And when a head coach goes out of his way to watch a young prospect in person, it’s usually worth paying attention.
