The Mavericks haven’t indicated they’re actively shopping Klay Thompson.
That said, Dallas faces an interesting balancing act as it attempts to contend while also building around young star Cooper Flagg.

As outlined by James Piercey of Dallas Hoops Journal, Thompson could emerge as a veteran worth monitoring on the trade market if the Mavericks decide to pursue future assets and additional roster flexibility.
Piercey identified three potential landing spots that make varying degrees of sense.
Rockets
According to Piercey, Houston could be a logical fit if the Rockets decide they need additional perimeter shooting.
While Thompson is no longer the elite two-way player he was during his prime years with the Warriors, he remains a respected floor spacer and veteran presence.
The Rockets also possess enough draft capital to potentially make a deal worthwhile from Dallas’ perspective.
Lakers
Another possibility raised by Piercey involves the Lakers.
Thompson originally joined Dallas hoping to play alongside Luka Doncic, only to see the Mavericks trade Doncic months later. A move to Los Angeles would reunite the veteran shooter with the superstar guard.
Piercey noted that the Lakers continue to seek spacing around Doncic and could have interest in adding another proven perimeter threat.
He also pointed out that the two teams have already been connected in various trade discussions involving Mavericks center Daniel Gafford.
Warriors
Then there’s the sentimental option.
According to Piercey, a return to Golden State would carry obvious appeal given Thompson’s history with the organization. The four-time champion spent 13 seasons with the Warriors and helped form one of the league’s most successful dynasties alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Whether a reunion makes basketball sense is open for debate. But the storyline would certainly generate attention.
The bigger picture
As Piercey noted, the Mavericks are attempting to navigate two different timelines.
They want to remain competitive in the short term while also positioning themselves for long-term success around Flagg.
That doesn’t automatically mean Thompson will be moved.
But if Dallas decides to explore veteran-for-assets scenarios this offseason, the veteran sharpshooter is one name worth watching.
