Timberwolves reportedly have strong interest in Celtics’ Derrick White

The Timberwolves may have shifted their attention away from Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they remain active in searching for ways to improve the roster around Anthony Edwards.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Minnesota has “strong” interest in Celtics guard Derrick White.

White, 31, remains one of the NBA’s most respected two-way guards. He averaged a career-high 16.5 points this past season, earned first-team All-Defense honors and continued to play a major role for Boston on both ends of the floor.

The fit in Minnesota is obvious.

White can play either guard spot, defend multiple positions and thrive without needing the ball in his hands, making him a natural complement to Edwards in the backcourt.

The question, of course, is whether the Celtics would have any interest in moving him.

White is under contract for at least the next two seasons, and there have been no indications that Boston is actively shopping one of its most valuable players. Still, Amick reported that Minnesota’s interest is significant as the Wolves continue to explore the trade market.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are also hoping to keep one of their own.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that Minnesota remains “very motivated” to re-sign free-agent guard Ayo Dosunmu, who made an immediate impact after arriving at the trade deadline.

Dosunmu averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists over his first 24 games with the Wolves while shooting better than 52 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc.

According to Stein, retaining Dosunmu could require additional salary maneuvering as Minnesota attempts to navigate the league’s increasingly restrictive tax and apron rules.
