Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wasn’t trying to make news. Somehow, he may have done just that.
Appearing on Nayeema Raza’s podcast, Gilbert smiled when the conversation briefly turned to James.
“We’ll see with LeBron,” Raza said.
“Maybe,” Gilbert replied.
Raza then referred to James as “The King.”
Gilbert simply responded, “Mhm.”
That’s obviously a long way from confirming anything. Gilbert didn’t elaborate, and there was no indication the exchange was anything more than lighthearted banter.
Still, with James’ future remaining one of the NBA’s biggest offseason storylines, even a brief response from the Cavaliers’ owner was enough to get fans talking.
James has yet to publicly reveal whether he’ll return to the Lakers, retire or pursue another opportunity. As things stand, there has been no credible reporting linking him to Cleveland beyond the usual offseason speculation.
Meanwhile, the Cavs continue to move forward with the core that reached the Eastern Conference finals this past season. Gilbert recently vowed that the organization would “dig in all summer” after the playoff exit, with the expectation that the front office will continue looking for ways to improve around Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and the rest.
So, no, Gilbert didn’t break any news. But he also didn’t ignore the question.
And when it comes to LeBron James, sometimes that’s all it takes to get the basketball world talking.
