The Timberwolves seemingly do not plan to extend the contract of starting point guard D’Angelo Russell, as relayed by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Darren Wolfson of SKOR North.
Russell, 26, is 6-foot-4 and in the final year of his four-year deal. Windhorst and Wolfson discussed his status on Wolfson’s The Scoop podcast.
“I have not heard any discussion of him getting an extension” Windhorst said of Russell, via RealGM.
Added Wolfson, “Well, I think (Russell’s) representation has reached out to the Wolves, but it doesn’t seem like it’s being reciprocated.”
Russell signed his original deal with the Nets as part of a sign-and-trade with the Warriors — the same trade that landed forward Kevin Durant in Brooklyn. Russell was traded to the Timberwolves a year later in a deal that sent small forward Andrew Wiggins to the Warriors.
Russell averaged 18.1 points and 7.1 assists in 65 games last season, as the Timberwolves returned to the playoffs. He will be eligible for an extension until June 30, so there is still time for the sides to reach an agreement.
