Lakers considering $20 million offer for Jonathan Kuminga

The Lakers may finally have a price in mind for Jonathan Kuminga.

According to Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times, LA is considering a two-year, $20 million contract for the free-agent forward. Pulling off that type of deal, however, would require the Lakers to either clear additional cap space or complete a sign-and-trade with the Hawks.

That’s easier said than done.

Earlier Tuesday, ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported that the Lakers remain the most aggressive team pursuing Kuminga despite already committing much of their available cap space to Walker Kessler, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.

Slater reported that Kuminga met virtually with Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick shortly after free agency opened, with the organization outlining a significant role alongside Luka Doncic.

Multiple members of the franchise, including players, have also reached out in an effort to recruit the former Warriors forward.

Still, Kuminga and his agent, Aaron Turner, have yet to commit, believing a stronger opportunity could emerge as free agency continues.

The Lakers have explored multiple paths to increasing their offer, according to Slater. One possibility would involve a sign-and-trade with Atlanta, while another would require moving salary elsewhere before their recent free-agent additions become official.

The Cavaliers also remain interested, Slater reported, largely because of Kuminga’s relationship with coach Kenny Atkinson. Cleveland’s pursuit, however, is tied to the unresolved LeBron James situation.

Sacramento has checked back in as well, though Slater reported the Kings would also need a sign-and-trade to make the finances work.

Kuminga remains one of the biggest names still available, and while the Lakers continue to push, there’s still no indication a decision is imminent.
