NBA salary cap
The NBA Players Association continues to push back against the league’s second tax apron.
New NBPA executive director David Kelly told The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov that the current system has gone too far, arguing it discourages teams from keeping championship-caliber rosters together.
“It’s not good for fans. Not good for players,” Kelly said. “The only people who really seem to love it are the owners.”
Kelly said the union would like to see the second apron either eliminated or softened, contending that teams should have greater flexibility to invest in winning rosters. He also challenged the idea that the current Collective Bargaining Agreement has created greater parity, noting that five different franchises captured NBA titles in the five seasons before the new CBA took effect.
NBPA president Fred VanVleet added that preparations for the league’s next labor negotiations have already begun.
“We’re getting ready for the next CBA,” VanVleet said. “Like today.”
Spurs
The Spurs continue to view De’Aaron Fox as a key part of their future.
According to Jared Weiss of The Athletic, San Antonio has privately reinforced that Fox is not available despite offseason trade speculation following a disappointing NBA Finals.
The Spurs reportedly believe Fox’s late postseason struggles were heavily influenced by the ankle injury he suffered during the playoffs. They also recognize his trade value isn’t at its peak after shooting just 35.3 percent following his return.
Fox recently began a four-year, $221.7 million contract extension with San Antonio.
Wizards
Trae Young‘s agent doesn’t believe the Wizards overpaid to acquire their new franchise point guard.
Speaking with Mark Medina of Fadeaway World, agent Aaron Mintz defended Young’s new four-year, $212.8 million contract by pointing to the value of elite point guards.
“When you look at the last two champions in this league, star players played the point guard position,” Mintz said.
Mintz added that Young should fit well alongside Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr while helping guide Washington’s young roster.
