Wizards’ Anthony Davis extension could become NBA’s next storyline

The entire NBA offseason remains centered on one question: Where will LeBron James ultimately land?

But according to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, another situation could soon command plenty of attention around the league.

In a column published Tuesday, Robinson wrote that all eyes should be on Aug. 6, when Anthony Davis becomes eligible to sign a contract extension with the Wizards. If a deal isn’t reached, Robinson believes speculation surrounding Davis’ future could quickly begin to intensify.

Washington acquired Davis from the Mavericks at the February trade deadline, making him one of the franchise’s biggest investments. Robinson suggested the upcoming extension talks could reveal just how committed the Wizards are to building with the veteran big man on the roster.

Robinson also pointed to the handling of James’ situation with the Lakers, writing that Klutch Sports has shown a willingness to be patient before making major decisions and suggesting Davis’ camp could take a similar approach.

If negotiations don’t progress, Robinson believes several contenders could emerge as logical landing spots should Davis’ future in Washington ever become uncertain.

Among the teams Robinson identified were the Warriors, Cavaliers, 76ers and Timberwolves. He also noted that while the Heat are frequently mentioned in superstar speculation, Miami may not have the assets to outbid other interested clubs without significantly reshaping its roster.

At this point, there has been no indication that the Wizards are exploring a trade involving Davis. Robinson’s column instead focuses on the importance of the upcoming extension window and how Washington handles negotiations with one of the league’s premier big men.

Whether an extension arrives quickly or talks take longer to develop, Robinson believes Aug. 6 is a date worth circling on the NBA calendar.
