Former Cavs wing Luke Travers returning to Australian league

Former Cavaliers wing Luke Travers is headed back to Australia after spending most of the past two seasons in the NBA and G League.

Travers has signed a two-year contract with Melbourne United of Australia’s NBL, the team announced. Interestingly, Bulls guard and fellow Australian Josh Giddey, who shares an agent with Travers, broke the news first on social media.

Travers, 24, spent the 2024-25 season with the Cavaliers on a two-way contract and returned on another two-way deal last summer. Cleveland waived him in February.

The 6-foot-7 wing appeared in 24 NBA games during his time with the Cavs, mostly in limited minutes. He had a considerably larger role with the Cleveland Charge, averaging 17.0 points, 9.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocks over 36 G League appearances.

Travers shot 46.5 percent from the field, though just 27.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Cleveland originally acquired Travers’ draft rights after he was selected with the No. 56 overall pick in 2022. He remained in Australia for two more seasons before making the jump to the NBA in 2024. Now he’s returning to a familiar spot.

Travers played for Melbourne during the 2023-24 season, helping United reach the NBL Finals. The club returned to the championship series the following year but again fell short.

This time, Travers said winning a title is at the top of his list.

“I’m obviously super excited to get another shot at winning a championship with United,” Travers said. “I’m coming into a group with a lot of really skilled, versatile players and veteran experience. I think the sky is the limit.”

His NBA opportunity never really materialized in Cleveland, but his G League production showed there was plenty to like about his all-around game. Now he’ll get a chance to turn that production into a much larger role back home.
