Stephen Curry on LeBron James decision: ‘That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens’

Stephen Curry isn’t spending much time wondering what might have been with LeBron James.

The Warriors star made his first public comments since James chose the 76ers, offering a fairly matter-of-fact response when asked about Golden State’s pursuit.

“That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens,” Curry said, via Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic. “There’s a lot of moving parts.”

There certainly were. Golden State emerged as one of the finalists for James, with Curry and Draymond Green both involved in the recruiting process.

James reportedly had genuine interest in playing alongside the longtime Warriors stars, but questions about Golden State’s ability to contend ultimately worked against it. Now the Warriors are left trying to figure out what’s next.

Jimmy Butler is recovering from a torn ACL and is expected to miss a significant portion of the season. Moses Moody is also sidelined with a torn patellar tendon. Curry, meanwhile, appeared in just 43 games last season while dealing with a knee issue.

Golden State finished 37-45 and lost in the play-in tournament.

“The whole calculus of everything changes,” Curry said of the Butler and Moody injuries. “How do you get through their absence and still stay at a certain level?”

Curry called himself a “realist” about the situation. The Warriors have explored several major additions in recent years, including James, Anthony Davis and Jaylen Brown. None materialized.

Curry, 38, is entering the final year of his contract at $62.6 million, though he’s eligible for an extension beginning Aug. 6.

In short, the Warriors missed on LeBron, and Curry seems well aware of the challenge that remains.

“We don’t live in any alternative universe,” he said.
