New York living reportedly played role in LeBron James choosing Sixers

LeBron James chose the 76ers because he believes they give him his best chance at another championship.

Apparently, geography didn’t hurt, either.

A source told Marc Stein of The Stein Line that the opportunity to live in New York City and commute to Philadelphia played a role in James’ decision to sign with the Sixers.

That’s an interesting wrinkle considering agent Rich Paul made it clear early in free agency that the defending champion Knicks weren’t a destination for James. Sources told Hoops Wire that James’ camp did reach out to New York at one point, but the Knicks weren’t interested in adding him.

Philadelphia gives James another option. He could maintain residences in both New York and Philadelphia while playing his 24th and potentially final NBA season.

Meanwhile, there are questions about exactly how James will fit on the court.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that James could settle into more of a complementary role, much as he did during his final season with the Lakers.

One Eastern Conference executive raised another issue: Who does the dirty work?

Philadelphia’s projected lineup is loaded with James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe, but none is known for screening, sacrificing touches or handling the less glamorous responsibilities championship teams typically need.

There’s also some concern within the Sixers about what all that star power could mean for Edgecombe’s development.

One rival coach wasn’t worried, telling Shelburne that playing alongside James and Brown should benefit the second-year guard.

Besides, the coach added, Edgecombe will get his chances. “It’s not like this team is going to stay healthy all year.”
