Lakers

The Lakers may not be finished reshaping their frontcourt.

Ryan Ward of LA On SI, citing Dan Woike of The Athletic, wrote that Chicago’s Jalen Smith remains a potential trade target as Los Angeles continues searching for another center.

Smith is viewed as an intriguing fit because of his energy, rebounding and ability to stretch the floor. The biggest question, however, is whether the Bulls would be willing to move him and what it would cost the Lakers to make a deal happen.

Ward also pointed to veteran Nick Richards as a possible free-agent option if Los Angeles decides to avoid the trade market altogether.

Grizzlies

Don’t expect the Grizzlies to contend for a championship just yet. But don’t write them off, either.

That’s the argument made by Landon Speck of Grizzlies On SI, who believes Memphis has enough young talent to push for a play-in spot despite entering the first year of its rebuild.

No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer headlines a promising young core that also includes Zach Edey, Cedric Coward, GG Jackson and Jaylen Wells. Boozer’s readiness, of course, will be a big key.

Speck also noted that veterans such as Ty Jerome, Jerami Grant and Isaiah Stewart should help establish an identity built around defense, rebounding and physical play.

If everything comes together, Memphis could wind up outperforming expectations.

Magic

Three-point shooting remains the biggest question facing the Magic.

That was the consensus from a panel assembled by Magic On SI, with several contributors wondering whether Orlando did enough this offseason to improve one of the NBA’s least efficient perimeter offenses.

While new coach Sean Sweeney and a healthy roster could help generate better looks, the panel generally agreed the Magic still need more consistent outside shooting if they hope to make the leap from playoff team to legitimate contender.

Not everyone shared that outlook. Some panelists argued Orlando’s biggest issue has been shot selection rather than shooting talent, suggesting improvements could come simply from a healthier roster and a more efficient offensive system.
