Victor Wembanyama has already done some things that don’t look particularly normal on a basketball court.
Apparently, he believes scoring 100 points in a game could eventually be one of them.
The Spurs star was asked during a quick-fire interview with French content creator Rookicks whether he believes he can reach triple digits in an NBA game.
“I agree, yeah,” Wembanyama said, via BasketNews.
Short answer. Pretty big statement.
Of course, only one player in NBA history has actually done it. Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points against the Knicks in 1962, establishing a record that has survived more than six decades.
Kobe Bryant came closest with 81 points against the Raptors in 2006. Bam Adebayo moved into second place on the NBA’s single-game scoring list when he erupted for 83 points last season.
Wembanyama’s career high is 50, set against the Wizards in November 2024.
But there have already been nights when something considerably bigger didn’t seem entirely impossible.
Wembanyama scored 25 points in less than eight minutes against the Lakers in February, then went into halftime with 37. The Spurs turned the game into a rout, limiting his opportunities after the break, and Wembanyama finished with 40 in a 136-108 win.
So, yes, getting from 50 to 100 would be quite the leap.
Then again, we’re talking about a 7-foot-4 player who can shoot threes, handle the ball, finish at the rim and score over just about anyone. Wembanyama is also only 22.
Wilt’s record has always felt like one of those NBA numbers that belongs in another universe. Wembanyama apparently thinks he can get there anyway.
