One of the more familiar voices in sports media is moving on from Sports Illustrated.
Jimmy Traina announced Wednesday that he is leaving SI after more than 20 years with the outlet, including a lengthy run covering the sports media business.
“It’s time for me to do something different & evolve with the changing sports media landscape,” Traina wrote on social media. “I will always be grateful to SI for all the opportunities and a life-changing run.”
For NBA fans, Traina’s work has crossed into the league plenty over the years.
His SI Media with Jimmy Traina podcast has featured ESPN NBA play-by-play voice Mike Breen, Charles Barkley, ESPN insider Shams Charania and NBC’s Mike Tirico, among numerous other prominent broadcasters, reporters and personalities.
Traina said he plans to discuss his departure on an upcoming podcast and will publish his final Sports Illustrated column Friday. Whatever comes next apparently won’t involve disappearing from the business.
“I won’t be on the sidelines for long,” he wrote.
According to Drew Lerner of Awful Announcing, Sports Illustrated appears likely to retain the existing SI Media podcast feed, with Traina indicating listeners will need to subscribe to a new podcast for his future work.
Traina originally became widely known at SI for creating “Hot Clicks,” the popular feature he wrote from 2007-13, before eventually becoming one of the site’s primary voices on sports broadcasting and media.
So where’s he going? Traina isn’t saying.
But given the rapidly changing sports-media world, including an NBA broadcasting landscape that looks considerably different than it did even a year ago, his next stop will be worth watching.
