The Warriors spent much of the offseason linked to bigger-name additions, but none of those pursuits ultimately produced a deal.
That doesn’t necessarily mean Golden State is finished.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. suggested the team could again turn to the trade market during the season, telling reporters that Golden State has several avenues available to upgrade the roster.
“We have multiple ways to get better during the season, which is something we’ve done the last few years,” Dunleavy said, via Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. “Whether it’s adding Jimmy Butler, adding Kristaps Porzingis, you can go as far back as adding Andrew Wiggins. I’d say we’re pretty good about improving our team in the middle of the year.”
There’s certainly recent history behind that statement. Golden State acquired Butler at the 2025 trade deadline, then landed Porzingis during last season by sending Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to Atlanta.
Dunleavy indicated the Warriors could be aggressive again if the opportunity presents itself.
“If you just look at our books, our assets, all that stuff, we’ve got a lot of ways to entice teams and make things available and worthwhile for them to do a trade with us,” he said. “So for those reasons, I feel pretty confident that if we have to improve the roster in the middle of the season we can.”
First, though, the Warriors need to stay afloat.
Butler and Moses Moody are expected to miss significant time, leaving Golden State to navigate the early portion of the season without two rotation regulars. Dunleavy said getting off to a good start is critical while the Warriors wait to see how both players progress.
He also pushed back against the idea that Golden State is simply bringing back last season’s 37-win team, pointing to Porzingis as effectively a new addition after he appeared in only 15 regular-season games following the trade.
The larger point seems pretty clear: The Warriors aren’t treating opening night as the deadline for constructing their best roster.
“The best version of our team is the most important version,” Dunleavy said. “It has to be in April, May and hopefully June.”
