Klay Thompson says Heat Culture is no vacation: ‘Very militaristic’

Klay Thompson didn’t come to Miami for the weather. Or the golf. Or, apparently, the piña coladas.

The newly signed Heat guard sounds like he’s all-in on the famed Heat Culture already, telling ESPN West Palm Beach that the organization’s demanding approach was actually part of the attraction.

“It’s very militaristic out here and the fitness programs are really demanding,” Thompson said, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “That’s what honestly attracted me to here and have that expectation of a deep playoff run.”

Then came the good part.

“Some people think South Florida is 18 holes and piña coladas but nah, it’s the opposite,” Thompson said. “It’s an honor to be here.”

Thompson, 36, reportedly surrendered about $9.8 million of his $17.5 million salary in a buyout with the Mavericks, clearing the way for him to join Miami after missing the playoffs in each of his two seasons in Dallas.

So this wasn’t just about finding another NBA job. Thompson wanted another chance to win.

He called joining the Heat a “match made in heaven” and said he welcomes the uncomfortable moments that can come with playing for such a demanding organization.

“I love that,” Thompson said. “I get a whole jolt of energy when I walk in this building and seeing photos on the wall of the championship runs and all the greats who played here. Gives me a new motivation to add a chapter to my legacy.”

Thompson already owns four championship rings. Sounds like he didn’t come to Miami to sip anything with an umbrella in it.
