Well, this is an unusual comeback story.
Jacob Tobey is returning as the Spurs’ play-by-play announcer, less than two months after stepping away from the job following allegations that he had an affair with the sister of San Antonio guard Lindy Waters III.
Tobey announced his return Friday, saying he understands he’ll have to rebuild trust within the organization and community.
“I thank the Spurs for allowing me time to step away to sort out issues in my personal life,” Tobey wrote on X. “I believe I have the best job in the world and am thrilled to be able to continue as the team’s play-by-play announcer.”
The story became public in July when an Instagram Story appeared on Tobey’s account claiming he had cheated on his girlfriend of six years with Loren Waters, Lindy’s sister.
Then came pictures that appeared to show Tobey and Loren Waters kissing. So, yeah. Not your standard NBA broadcasting transaction.
The New York Post reported at the time that Tobey had lost his job, though his statement Friday characterized the situation as being allowed “time to step away.”
Either way, his departure generated some criticism. Fox Sports personality Colin Cowherd questioned why someone’s alleged infidelity should cost him his job, while former Spurs guard Danny Green called Tobey a “really good dude” and said his private decisions didn’t warrant losing the position.
Apparently, the story now has another chapter. Tobey is back. The Spurs are giving him another opportunity. And he acknowledges there is some trust to rebuild.
Beyond that, we’ll leave the relationship advice to somebody else.
