Kawhi Leonard already working out alongside Raptors

Kawhi Leonard isn’t officially a member of the Raptors yet. You apparently wouldn’t know it by looking around Miami.

Leonard has joined Raptors players for an organized minicamp in Miami, league sources told Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

There is one rather important restriction. Because Leonard’s trade from the Clippers has yet to become official, he is limited to individual workouts and cannot fully participate with his soon-to-be Toronto teammates.

In other words, Kawhi is basically a Raptor who isn’t allowed to do Raptor things yet.

As we noted earlier Tuesday, the trade remains on hold while the Clippers sort through their leadership structure following the NBA’s cap-circumvention investigation. Owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended for one year, while basketball operations president Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension.

The expectation remains that the blockbuster trade will eventually go through under its original terms, sending Leonard to Toronto for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, two second-rounders and a 2027 first-round pick swap.

Leonard doesn’t appear overly concerned about the delay. Last week, his own statement began with the words, “As I return to Toronto.” Now he’s hanging around with Raptors players in Miami.

At this point, everybody seems to know where Leonard is going. They’re just waiting for the paperwork to catch up.
