The Warriors didn’t overhaul their roster after winning 37 games. That means the most significant changes may need to come from the people coaching it.
Steve Kerr included himself in that group.
“We’ve studied everything over the offseason, taken a lot of time to watch film and see certain combinations, what we did well, what we didn’t do well,” Kerr told Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area. “I really believe we’re going to be better, and I think I’ve got to be better.”
Golden State’s problems last season extended beyond its talent. Poole pointed to poor late-game execution, avoidable turnovers, questionable shots and defensive rotations that either arrived late or never arrived.
Kerr will continue overseeing the offense with Bruce Fraser, Seth Cooper and Nicholas Kerr. But he’s handing the defense to new associate head coach Frank Vogel.
“Frank’s a great coach,” Kerr said. “He’s a great defensive mind, especially, but he’s someone who I feel very comfortable with right next to me. I’m going to turn the defense over to him.”
Vogel coached the Lakers to the 2020 championship and has built his reputation largely on that end of the floor.
The Warriors made some roster adjustments, but nothing resembling a teardown or dramatic reconstruction. Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green remain the foundation.
Golden State is betting that better organization can produce better basketball.
Kerr appears to understand that the bet is also on him.
