Hawks, Hornets have discussed Buddy Hield-Dorian Finney-Smith trade

The Hawks and Hornets have discussed a potential trade built around Buddy Hield and Dorian Finney-Smith, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.

Fischer reported that the teams have held on-and-off talks at various points this month, though there is no indication that an agreement is imminent, as relayed by NBA On SI⁠.

Atlanta has explored trades involving Hield and his $9.7 million salary throughout the summer, Fischer added.

The Hawks acquired Hield from the Warriors in the trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Golden State. Although Atlanta guaranteed Hield’s contract, its crowded roster and surplus of perimeter shooting have made him a logical trade candidate.

Finney-Smith would provide something different.

At his best, the 6-foot-7 forward supplies defensive versatility, toughness and enough shooting to remain playable alongside offensive-minded lineups. He struggled last season, appearing in only 37 games and making 27 percent of his 3-pointers after undergoing ankle surgery in June 2025.

That makes this less than a simple talent upgrade. It would be a bet that Finney-Smith can recover physically and again resemble the useful 3-and-D forward he has been for much of his career.

The finances also require more work. A straight swap would reportedly push Atlanta slightly above the luxury-tax line, and the Hawks still need to reduce their roster before opening night.

Finney-Smith is owed $13.3 million in 2027-28, but that salary is non-guaranteed. That gives Atlanta an escape route next summer.

The discussions make sense. Whether they produce an actual deal may depend upon what else the Hawks can move with training camp approaching.
