The NBA’s investigation into Gary Trent Jr.’s four-year, $64 million contract with the Bucks remains ongoing.
A league spokesperson confirmed the status of the probe but declined to provide further details, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.
Milwaukee and Klutch Sports Group, Trent’s agency, are cooperating with the investigation. The NBA has hired the national investigations firm Hecker Fink to handle the matter.
The deal attracted scrutiny because Trent accepted team-friendly contracts during his first two seasons in Milwaukee before receiving the fully guaranteed $64 million agreement this summer.
He signed for the veteran’s minimum in 2024 and accepted $3.7 million in 2025. That led to speculation about whether those contracts were connected to an understanding that the Bucks would reward him once they acquired his Early Bird rights.
No evidence of such an agreement has been publicly established.
Rival executives told The Athletic that the timing also drew attention. The agreement was reached July 11, after most cap space and roster openings around the league had disappeared.
Milwaukee has maintained that the new contract reflects Trent’s market value and that the organization viewed him as roughly a $15 million-per-year player.
The NBA began looking into the agreement during the summer, before concluding its separate investigation into the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard.
The circumstances are different, but recent history makes clear that proven cap circumvention can bring severe penalties. The Clippers lost five first-round picks, were fined $30 million and had multiple executives suspended.
The Timberwolves also lost five first-rounders after their secret agreement with Joe Smith came to light in 2000.
No timetable has been reported for the completion of the Trent investigation.
