The Bulls are trading guard Rob Dillingham to the Hornets for Buddy Hield and cash considerations, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
For Dillingham, it’s another chance to find his footing. The 6-foot-2 guard arrived in Chicago from the Timberwolves during last season and averaged 9.6 points in 21.5 minutes per game with the Bulls. He’s two seasons into his NBA career and now headed to his third team.
Hield’s stay in Charlotte was considerably shorter. The Hornets acquired him from the Hawks earlier this week in the trade that sent Dorian Finney-Smith to Atlanta. Before that, Hield had been dealt from the Warriors to the Hawks in February. So, yes, he’s been on the move.
The deal pushes Chicago over the salary cap, though the Bulls still have their $9.4 million room exception available, per RealGM. Both teams remain well below the luxury tax line.
Whether either guard makes his new team’s opening-night roster remains to be seen. Chicago has an open standard roster spot, while Charlotte has more players under standard contracts than it can carry into the regular season. That gives the Bulls a clearer path to keeping Hield, but neither team has revealed what comes next.
