NBA Notes: Heat, Dennis Smith Jr, Nets, Jordi Fernandez, Warriors

Heat

Dennis Smith Jr. has another agreement with an NBA team, though his next stop appears likely to be back in the G League.

The Heat will sign Smith to an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Winderman adds that Smith won’t be with the team for the start of training camp and is expected to return to the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

NBA insider hris Haynes first reported the agreement, noting that the Heat had closely monitored Smith throughout the offseason.

Smith, 28, has played for six NBA teams since being selected ninth overall in 2017. His defense has helped keep him in the conversation. His inconsistent shooting has made sticking around more difficult.

He averaged 8.1 points, 5.6 assists and 1.7 steals across 32 G League games last season, including 21 with Sioux Falls. If waived, he could earn an Exhibit 10 bonus by spending at least 60 days with the Skyforce.

Nets

Jordi Fernandez has spent two seasons coaching the Nets through a roster overhaul. This season should offer a better opportunity to judge the man, writes Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

The Nets have won just 46 games during Fernandez’s tenure. That doesn’t tell us much without considering the players he’s had available.

Now, Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle give Fernandez two established scorers to lean on while developing the younger players. Both have talked about exceeding expectations.

There’s also this: The Nets don’t control their first-round pick, so another season near the bottom would offer little consolation on draft night.

Lewis points to getting the best out of Randle as one way Fernandez could help the team establish an identity. Nobody is asking the Nets to become contenders overnight. But some progress in the standings would certainly be welcome.

Warriors

Miles Kelly will get a chance to show the Warriors something they’ve long appreciated. Namely, an ability to make threes.

The Warriors announced Kelly’s signing and their training camp roster Sunday. He joins Dalen Terry and Alex Toohey as camp invitees on non-guaranteed contracts.

Kelly appeared in 14 games with the Mavericks last season, but his larger body of work came with the Texas Legends. He averaged 21.0 points and shot 38.3 percent from three in 33 G League appearances.

That percentage came on 8.7 attempts per game. So he wasn’t exactly being shy about it.

The Warriors already have 15 players on standard contracts and all three two-way spots filled, making an opening-night job a difficult proposition. Still, Kelly’s shooting gives him something to showcase during camp, with a possible G League opportunity to follow.
