Kristaps Porzingis to miss Warriors camp with health issue

The Warriors will open training camp without Kristaps Porzingis, who is dealing with an unspecified health issue and will not travel with the team to Hawaii, Anthony Slater of ESPN reports.

The team has not given a timetable for his return. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., however, stopped short of saying Porzingis would miss the start of the regular season.

“I’m not marking him down as being out to start the season or anything like that,” Dunleavy told reporters. “He’s just not available this week.”

Obviously, Golden State would certainly prefer to have him on the floor as camp begins. The Warriors acquired Porzingis from the Hawks in February and saw him play just 15 games the rest of the season. He averaged 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 23.7 minutes when available.

Golden State then signed the 7-foot-2 big man to a two-year, $40 million extension this summer. At 31, he can still give the Warriors shooting and rim protection from the same position. Getting him into the lineup consistently has been the harder part.

Porzingis has dealt with health issues, including a previously disclosed diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. The Warriors have not said whether his current absence is related to that condition.

With Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody also recovering from injuries, Porzingis’ availability is one of the first questions facing the Warriors. Dunleavy’s comments offer some hope for opening night, but the they’ll start camp without him.
