Jalen Duren contract situation with Pistons officially a holdout

The Jalen Duren situation isn’t just an uncomfortable contract negotiation anymore. It’s a holdout.

Duren skipped Pistons Media Day on Monday and isn’t participating in the start of training camp as the sides remain far apart on a new contract, according to ESPN.

Detroit president Trajan Langdon didn’t sound interested in pouring gasoline on it.

“We are excited to have him back when he gets back,” Langdon said, via the Associated Press.

Whenever that is. Duren, a restricted free agent, has until Thursday to accept Detroit’s one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer. Doing so would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

The Pistons reportedly offered Duren a fully guaranteed five-year, $200 million contract. Duren has been seeking something closer to the five-year maximum of roughly $287 million, according to Reuters.

But apparently this isn’t entirely about finding another $87 million.

Duren reportedly feels disrespected by the way negotiations have unfolded, with the standoff reaching a point where the relationship itself has become part of the problem.

That’s quite a turn for a 22-year-old coming off his first All-Star season.

Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last year, made the All-NBA third team and helped Detroit finish atop the Eastern Conference.

The Pistons obviously want him. Duren presumably still wants to be paid like they do. Training camp has arrived, and neither side has blinked.
