Some NBA partnerships require a little imagination. LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards isn’t one of them.
Put those two in the same backcourt and the possibilities become fairly obvious. The question is whether the reality will be as entertaining as the idea.
Ball has spent much of the past two months working at the Timberwolves’ facility and getting acclimated after Minnesota acquired him in a four-team blockbuster in July, as noted by Anthony Slater of ESPN.
Edwards has been around plenty, too. That’s important, because Minnesota isn’t merely hoping the two stars coexist. The Timberwolves need them to figure out how to make each other better.
Edwards is one of the NBA’s most explosive scorers. Ball brings size, creativity, passing and the ability to manufacture something when a possession looks like it’s going nowhere. There should be highlights. Lots of highlights.
Whether there will be enough winning to put Minnesota alongside the Spurs and Thunder in the West is another matter. That’s what training camp is for.
The Timberwolves made the biggest backcourt gamble of the offseason because they believe Ball can help Edwards take them somewhere they haven’t been.
At the very least, nobody should accuse them of being boring.
