Ja Morant has been an NBA starter for his entire career. If the Trail Blazers want that to change, apparently he’s fine with it.
Portland enters camp with a rather absurd collection of guards that includes Morant, Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson. Somebody is going to sacrifice something.
Morant says starting isn’t particularly important to him.
“Winning is the most important thing for me,” he said at Media Day, via Rip City Project. “So whatever role I have to play to get that done, I don’t think anybody would be mad after a win.”
That’s certainly the correct answer. It’s also an interesting one from a two-time All-Star who became one of the league’s biggest names in Memphis and is still just 27.
Morant averaged 19.5 points last season and has battled injuries and plenty of turbulence over the past few years. Portland represents a fresh start. Maybe even a fresh role.
“If I’m starting, if I’m not, it’s the same thing,” Morant said. “For me, I have no problem with either.”
We’ll see what happens when the games begin. But if Morant really means it, Portland’s crowded backcourt just became a little easier to manage.
