Victor Wembanyama hasn’t forgotten how last season ended. Apparently, there were nights when the NBA Finals wouldn’t let him.
The Spurs star admitted that losing to the Knicks in five games stuck with him well into the offseason.
“I’ve had a few sleepless nights,” Wembanyama said at Media Day, via Reuters. “Maybe not sleepless nights, but hard to find sleep sometimes or hard emotions, haunting sometimes.”
That’s not necessarily a bad thing. San Antonio reached the Finals in Wembanyama’s third NBA season. Now the Spurs enter this one knowing exactly how close they came, and exactly how lousy it felt when they didn’t finish the job. Wembanyama isn’t interested in pretending otherwise.
“We don’t want to hide from anything,” he said. “We’re going to face these emotions.”
He also called the Spurs “very hopeful” and “very ambitious.” They should be.
Wembanyama is coming off a season in which he averaged 25 points and 11.5 rebounds and became the NBA’s youngest Defensive Player of the Year.
The Spurs aren’t the fun young team trying to arrive anymore. They arrived. Now comes the considerably harder part. Namely, getting back.
