Caleb Wilson is 6-foot-10 but the Bulls might have him guard your point guard anyway.
New coach Tiago Splitter said after Chicago’s first training camp practice that the No. 4 overall pick will be asked to defend considerably different players than he did in college, via Elias Schuster of Sports Illustrated.
That includes spending time on the perimeter. Maybe even against opposing point guards.
Wilson primarily defended fours and fives in college, so Splitter acknowledged there will be plenty to learn when it comes to navigating screens and handling isolation situations against smaller players. Wilson didn’t sound particularly concerned.
“I’m comfortable guarding whoever they put in front of me,” he said.
Well, there you go. Wilson was considered one of the most athletic players in this year’s draft after averaging 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds at North Carolina.
He also arrived in Chicago saying he has no intention of blending in just because he’s a rookie.
Now the Bulls are testing exactly how much he can handle. Bigs. Wings. Guards. Apparently, bring them all. Wilson says he’ll figure it out.
