Jason Kidd may be trading the Mavericks’ sideline for a television studio.
The former Dallas coach is in advanced talks to join ESPN’s NBA studio coverage, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports. No deal has been announced, and his precise role remains unclear.
The Mavericks fired Kidd in May, shortly after hiring Masai Ujiri as president of basketball operations, then brought in Dusty May as coach. Kidd spent five seasons in Dallas and guided the team to the 2024 NBA Finals.
ESPN has a studio opening after Michael Malone left to coach at North Carolina. Kidd would bring plenty to the desk. He’s a Hall of Fame point guard who won a championship with the Mavericks as a player, then coached the Nets, Bucks and Mavs. Between the Milwaukee and Dallas jobs, he served as a Lakers assistant.
He also knows exactly what it feels like to hear people on television pick apart a coach’s decisions. Should this deal get done, Kidd would get a turn on the other side of that conversation.
