Victor Wembanyama may be keeping his U.S. interviews to a minimum. There is, however, one outlet he’s willing to talk to: 60 Minutes.
“He’s locked in,” ESPN’s Michael C. Wright said on The Hoop Collective. “As a matter of fact, I was told he’s not even talking to any American media outlets except for 60 Minutes.”
That is quite a choice. If you’re going to make one exception, it might as well be a show that gives you more than 60 seconds to answer a question.
Wright’s comment appears to concern interviews, rather than routine media availability. He reported Wembanyama’s comments at Spurs media day last week, when the star discussed how San Antonio’s NBA Finals loss to the Knicks had stayed with him.
“I’ve had a few sleepless nights,” Wembanyama said then. “We don’t want to hide from anything. We’re going to face these emotions.”
The Spurs reached the Finals in his third season and lost in five games. Wembanyama called the team “very hopeful” and “very ambitious” heading into this one.
So, yes, he’ll still answer basketball questions. Getting a lengthy sit-down with him sounds like a different matter. And apparently, 60 Minutes made the cut.
