Wizards unlikely to offer Anthony Davis max extension, per report

Anthony Davis wants to be paid like a maximum-contract player on his next deal. The Wizards don’t appear inclined to do it.

Washington is unlikely to offer Davis a contract at or near the max, according to David Aldridge and Josh Robbins of The Athletic. Teams around the league are aware that Davis is seeking that level of money.

If Davis declines his $62.8 million player option for 2027-28, he could become eligible for a four-year extension worth up to roughly $275 million. He also turns 34 in March and has played more than 62 regular-season games only once in the past eight years.

The Wizards have other contracts to consider. They signed Trae Young to a four-year, $213 million deal this summer and are building around No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa. Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George and Bilal Coulibaly will command attention in future negotiations, too.

None of this means Washington is unhappy with Davis. General manager Will Dawkins recently described him as “focused and ready to start the season,” adding that he expects Davis to remind people who he is.

That’s something Davis can settle on the court. Whether it brings the two sides closer on a contract is another question. If it doesn’t, his name could become a familiar one as the February trade deadline approaches.
