Spurs, Nuggets, Pacers and Nets unveil ABA throwbacks for 50th anniversary

The ABA is getting another run in the NBA.

The Spurs, Nuggets, Pacers and Nets, the four franchises that joined the NBA from the ABA in 1976, unveiled throwback uniforms Monday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the merger.

San Antonio is going back to the look made famous during the George Gervin era, with silver uniforms featuring the original arched “Spurs” wordmark. The Spurs will wear them nine times and also introduced a matching retro court, according to KSAT.

Indiana will honor its particularly successful ABA history with uniforms reminiscent of the teams coached by Bobby “Slick” Leonard. The Pacers also created a throwback court featuring plaid lanes inspired by Leonard’s trademark jackets.

Denver went even further back. The Nuggets will wear orange uniforms inspired by the Denver Rockets, the franchise’s original ABA name before it became the Nuggets upon entering the NBA. The Denver Gazette reports Denver will wear the look nine times.

The Nets also unveiled ABA-inspired Classic Edition uniforms as part of their 60th anniversary celebration, with the retro look scheduled to debut on opening night.

So yes, red-white-and-blue basketballs would complete the package. But four ABA throwbacks showing up across the league is a pretty good start.
