Cavs pick up fourth-year option on Jaylon Tyson

The Cavaliers have exercised Jaylon Tyson’s fourth-year team option, keeping the guard under contract through the 2027-28 season, president of basketball operations Koby Altman announced Tuesday.

The decision follows a breakout second season in which Tyson became a regular starter and one of the NBA’s most accurate three-point shooters. He averaged 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 66 games, including 42 starts, shooting 49.3 percent from the field and 44.6 percent from three, the fourth-best mark in the league.

He also established career highs in every major statistical category, giving the Cavs considerably more production than he had during a limited rookie role.

His biggest night came January 16 in Philadelphia, when he scored 39 points on 13-of-17 shooting, including seven three-pointers. Tyson joined Kevin Love and Roy Hinson as the only Cavaliers to score at least 39 points on 17 or fewer field-goal attempts.

The scoring wasn’t limited to a handful of big games. Tyson reached double figures 46 times, including 15 straight appearances from January 10 through February 9, and scored at least 20 points eight times.

He contributed on the glass, too. Tyson finished with seven double-doubles, third-most on the team, and collected a career-high 15 rebounds to go with 23 points in a December win at Houston. Eight of those rebounds came on the offensive end.

The No. 20 overall pick in the 2024 draft out of California, Tyson enters his third season with a much more established place in the rotation. Picking up his option was an expected step after the progress he made last year.
