LeBron James has enjoyed plenty of big nights at Madison Square Garden. His first game with the Sixers gave him another reason to smile.
After Philadelphia beat the Knicks 106-100 on Tuesday, James was asked on NBC whether he enjoyed winning on the night New York celebrated its championship.
“Yeah, I do,” he said, via Christian Arnold of the New York Post. “It’s pretty special.”
James finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in 34 minutes, helping Philadelphia leave with a win after the Knicks received their rings and raised a banner commemorating their first championship in 53 years.
It was also James’ first victory since signing a two-year, $8 million contract with the Sixers, joining Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and fellow newcomer Jaylen Brown.
The evening included some familiar Garden theater. James exchanged words with a courtside spectator during the second quarter, prompting Spike Lee to intervene.
According to NBC’s Mike Tirico, the spectator had made comments about James’ helicopter and told him that living in New York didn’t mean Knicks fans would cheer for him. As Arnold recounts, video showed James responding before Lee helped settle things down.
“Guess who’s playing peacemaker? Spike Lee,” analyst Reggie Miller said on the broadcast. “He’s over here playing peacemaker. Boy, I’ve seen everything.”
James’ appreciation for the Garden is well established. He recently told ESPN that he had considered ending his career with the Knicks, an idea that lost its appeal once New York won the championship.
“I had visions of playing in [Madison Square] Garden and finishing my career in the Garden,” James said. “One of the best places I’ve ever played.”
“But after [the Knicks] beat San Antonio, I was like, ‘Hey, I can’t.’ I couldn’t do it.”
Instead, James arrived for the celebration wearing a rival’s uniform and helped send the home crowd away disappointed. Philadelphia hosts the Cavaliers on Thursday in its home opener.
