The Warriors have begun exploring trades involving Kristaps Porzingis as the veteran center seriously considers his basketball future, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Porzingis is dealing with recurring symptoms of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, commonly known as POTS. Charania reports that stepping away from basketball permanently is a possibility if there is no breakthrough in his recovery.
The 31-year-old remains out indefinitely and did not accompany Golden State on its season-opening road trip. The Warriors open Wednesday against the Lakers.
Porzingis is owed $20 million this season, with only a small partial guarantee next year, making his contract function much like an expiring deal. Charania noted that the Warriors could potentially package it with assets in a trade.
Coach Steve Kerr has stayed in contact with Porzingis and emphasized that the team’s concern extends beyond filling his minutes.
“Our first order of business is to support Kristaps and help him through this,” Kerr said, via Alder Almo of Heavy.
The Warriors acquired Porzingis from the Hawks in February, hoping his shooting, size and rim protection would strengthen their frontcourt.
His absence leaves Draymond Green and Al Horford handling center responsibilities, with Charles Bassey also dealing with a knee issue. Rookie Graham Ike, on a two-way contract, could receive opportunities as Kerr sorts through the available options.
